High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

At Ringrose Public School, we proudly align with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, recognising and valuing the diverse strengths, abilities, and interests of every learner. Our inclusive approach ensures all students are supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their personal best.

Through our HPGE programs, we nurture potential across academic, creative, physical, and social-emotional domains. Students are encouraged to explore their passions, build confidence, and develop a love of learning that prepares them for lifelong success and wellbeing.

In our classroom

At Ringrose Public School, we are committed to implementing a comprehensive range of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) initiatives within our classrooms.

Teachers regularly utilise formative assessment to monitor student progress, adapt instruction, and differentiate learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Explicit teaching practices are embedded across all Key Learning Areas to ensure students are provided with opportunities to think critically, apply problem-solving strategies, and engage deeply with their learning. Staff continually refine and enhance their explicit teaching skills through targeted professional learning throughout the year.

Every classroom fosters a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where students are encouraged to thrive academically, build confidence, take risks in their learning, and engage in exploration and self-reflection. Across Kindergarten to Year 6, students receive strength-based feedback and are supported to develop the skills needed to set meaningful learning goals aligned with their individual abilities and potential.

Across our school

At Ringrose Public School, we are dedicated to nurturing the interests, talents, and potential of every student through a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. These programs form an integral part of our HPGE approach, providing avenues for students to extend their learning, explore their passions, and develop new skills beyond the classroom.

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of whole-school programs, including:

-          Debating

-          Burra Group

-          Choir

-          Art Club

-          Dance

-          Sport – Gala Days, Carnivals

-          Student Representative Council (SRC)

-          Library Monitors – Leadership

-          Year 6 Leadership Roles

Through these opportunities, students are supported to think creatively, collaborate with others, and build confidence as they develop their strengths. Each activity aims to nurture high potential and foster a love of learning, ensuring every student can thrive both academically and personally.

Across NSW

Each year, Ringrose Public School proudly participates in a range of statewide competitions that provide valuable High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities for our students. These programs allow students to challenge themselves, extend their learning, and showcase their talents in diverse fields.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes vocabulary development, precision, and focus as students compete in an engaging and intellectually stimulating environment.

The Premier’s Debating Challenge supports students in developing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and confidence in public speaking through structured and collaborative debate.

The School Spectacular is a renowned performing arts event that celebrates the talents, diversity, and creativity of students from across New South Wales public schools. Participation in this event provides an opportunity for students to express themselves artistically while building teamwork and performance skills.
